Bike Walk BG Winter Walking Group

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – One of the best ways to combat Seasonal Affective Disorder is exercise, but for many people getting out and staying active in the winter is extremely difficult and they don’t want to do it alone.

Natasha Smith with Bike Walk BG decided that she should do something about this and started a walking group that meets downtown in Fountain Square Park.

“I actually watched a webinar on Winter placemaking, which is just finding ways to take advantage of your surroundings and your community, the resources that you have available, and trying to make a sense of community and be active through the winter and it seemed like walking is the easiest way to do that.” Smith said.

She believes that the accountability provided by walking as a group may be a catalyst in making more people stay active in the winter and stick to their goals set during the New Year.

For people who have been attracted to take part in the group like Heather Kessler it is just as much about being outside as it is about getting her exercise in.

“This is my first time to participate in the walking program and I was looking forward to it. A good way to get out of the house, even though it’s a little chilly today or a whole lot chilly today. But I still think that, you know, meeting new people and enjoying our downtown. I’m a downtown person and it’s a good opportunity to be in an area I like and get some exercise at the same time.” Kessler said.
