Acclimatizing to your new pet

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Many people get new pets over the holidays, shelters which have seen a surge in intake since the end of the COVID-19 Pandemic have been happy to see many of their shelter animals leave. The hope is that many of them will have found good homes and won’t need to return.

There are a variety of ways to make sure that your new pet can happily and healthily acclimatize to living in your home. Marketing Coordinator at the Bowling Green-Warren County Animal Shelter Kate Holmes says that a good deal of patience may be required as your pet decompresses from the shelter.

“When you adopt, you want to remember the three, three, three rule. So basically, it takes them three days to decompress and then three weeks to learn a bit of your routine and start to get used to it. And then three months for them to really feel at home.” Holmes said.
