New motor vehicle plate system for county cerks across Kentucky

WARREN COUNTY, Ky.- The date for the new system at every county clerk office across the commonwealth is slowly approaching.

The impact of this new system will affect offices’ motor vehicle departments. In Warren County, the new system might be difficult when it first begins, but after a few months, it will benefit the state and the drivers on the road.

Warren County Clerk Lynette Yates shares how the system will function and how it will impact drivers.

She says, “Everyone will keep their plate when they transfer their vehicle or something like that. That’s going to cause some issues in the beginning, especially because that plate may be assigned to you or to the previous owner if you’ve just got a vehicle. Things like that, so it’s going to be a transition for everyone.”

This change is not just impacting the county clerk and drivers, it also will impact local law enforcement.

We spoke with Warren County sheriff Brett Hightower and learned how they plan to navigate the new system.

Hightower says, “Downloading of all this information when they do a mass dump like they were doing with millions of records, it, you know, some of your- you may own five cars and only three of them get into the system. With any new system, that means change these next few weeks will require patience from drivers and officers.  The Warren County Clerk’s Office will be closed at the end of business on Dec. 29, and it is scheduled to be re-opened Jan. 11. For more information and a better understanding of the new system, call your local clerk’s office – dates and times may very depending on your county.
