Community mourning a loss after Allen County teens involved in car accident

ALLEN COUNTY, Ky. – On the evening of Dec. 23, two Allen county teens befell a car accident, resulting in severe injury and the loss of a life.

Driver 16-year-old Braxton Patrick unfortunately died in Saturday evening’s accident, while best friend Brooklyn Carter suffered terrible injuries that could likely leave her paralyzed. News 40 spoke to Brookyln Carter’s parents, who said that their 17-year-old daughter has been in good spirits after two surgeries and are holding out that in time, their daughter will walk again.

The Carters told News 40 that Brooklyn is a twin, and their older daughter is due to give birth to their second grandchild on Dec. 28. It is has been a very unfortunate situation for both families to say the least.

News 40 spoke to Allen County Scottsville High’s principal as well, who said he worries for the rest of the student body. Principal Shane Humphrey said kids are “resilient these days, but you never know how this can trigger somebody else… that’s what I’ve been struggling with since this happened.”

Humphrey said he and Braxton would talk often, and this incident is something that will be felt throughout the community for years. The school quickly put together a team to offer grief counseling for Christmas Eve. Humphrey said he felt the students that did come got something out of it; talking about Braxton, laughing and remembering the good times with him.

A few efforts are being made to help out the Carter family with their medical bills. Braxton’s family asks in lieu of flowers, they ask that the community help Victor and Mandy.

A teacher at ACSHS is taking up money via her Venmo account using @Maegan-Renick-1, and the local church that the Carter’s attend have a Gofundme set up as well that you can access by clicking here.

Braxton Patrick’s funeral will be this Saturday at 2 p.m. in the East Willow Church of God, Dec. 30.
