Adopting pets around the holidays

MORGANTOWN, Ky. – If you’re thinking about getting a cute new friend for the holidays as a present, make sure you’re checking all the boxes.

All the local shelters have been dealing with overcrowding for several months now, but one of the worst things that can happen to a shelter pet is coming into an unstable home and ultimately going back to the shelter.

Butler County Animal Shelter recently paraded a float that touched on that very idea and offered some words of advice for adopting around this time.

According to staffers at the shelter, you have to be cognizant of the time and space your animal would need. While some breeds of dogs would do well in apartments, some would not at all. How will your new pet interact with your small child or other animal you have in the house? Do you work long hours and maybe have less time to tend to your animal? These are all points of concern that BCAS raised for potential families.

Over the last several months, all local shelters have had overcrowding issues, and while BCAS would love to see the building clear out because of an influx in adoptions, what’s most important to them is a stable home so that they don’t end up coming back to the shelter.

BCAS has been pushing their foster program heavy this season, allowing families to put up an animal for about a week or so to just see how the new member would work in the home, or just to relieve stress for the shelter.
