Change your clocks and your batteries!

SOUTH CENTRAL KENTUCKY – As the clocks roll back, it’s a good rule of thumb to survey your warning systems in the home.

Smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors have the potential to work overtime when the weather starts to get a little chilly. As the temperatures cool down, the use of heat sources goes up, but so does the danger. News 40 spoke to Mike Cooksey, Scottsville’s fire chief, about the need to keep your alarms up to date.

The chief said it’s especially important in the winter to keep your batteries current and maybe even replace systems all together if you’ve had them for a while. According to the chief, if you have any kind of gas powdered heat in your home, you need a carbon monoxide detector as well.

Cooksey told News 40 of a fire earlier in the week that serves as a reminder to homeowners to keep vigilant and prepared. Cooksey said a gentleman left some clothes on a wall heater in his bathroom that unfortunately caught on fire. Luckily the house was saved before too much damage was done, but the man did not have a smoke detector in the house according to the chief.
