For most, it’s been a cloudy, breezy, chilly day with occasional light rain showers and flurries. That chance will continue tonight and even into early Saturday morning. But once upper level energy moves away on Saturday, we will begin to see improving weather as we head into the holiday weekend. Sunday is New Year’s Eve and it will be sunny and warmer with highs around 50. As we head into New Year’s Eve night, temperatures will start to fall with the passage of a dry cold front. It will be another punch of colder air that will greet us on New Year’s Day (Monday) and continue into much of next week.

Bike Walk BG Winter Walking Group https://www.wnky.com/bike-walk-bg-winter-walking-group/ Sat, 30 Dec 2023 05:04:09 +0000 https://www.wnky.com/?p=1881321

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – One of the best ways to combat Seasonal Affective Disorder is exercise, but for many people getting out and staying active in the winter is extremely difficult and they don’t want to do it alone.

Natasha Smith with Bike Walk BG decided that she should do something about this and started a walking group that meets downtown in Fountain Square Park.

“I actually watched a webinar on Winter placemaking, which is just finding ways to take advantage of your surroundings and your community, the resources that you have available, and trying to make a sense of community and be active through the winter and it seemed like walking is the easiest way to do that.” Smith said.

She believes that the accountability provided by walking as a group may be a catalyst in making more people stay active in the winter and stick to their goals set during the New Year.

For people who have been attracted to take part in the group like Heather Kessler it is just as much about being outside as it is about getting her exercise in.

“This is my first time to participate in the walking program and I was looking forward to it. A good way to get out of the house, even though it’s a little chilly today or a whole lot chilly today. But I still think that, you know, meeting new people and enjoying our downtown. I’m a downtown person and it’s a good opportunity to be in an area I like and get some exercise at the same time.” Kessler said.

More information about the group can be found at https://www.warrenpc.org/bike-ped/.

National Blood Donor Month https://www.wnky.com/national-blood-donor-month/ Sat, 30 Dec 2023 05:03:51 +0000 https://www.wnky.com/?p=1881336

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The first of the new year is upon us and there is no better way to start it than to start with charity.

National Blood Donor Month is meant to encourage people to donate blood. The pool this year is bigger than ever because of the new guidelines established by the Food and Drug Administration allowing LGBTQIA+ individuals to donate blood with the same ease as anyone else.

Max Winitz at Blood Assurance wants people to know that his group especially keeps all of the blood they draw in Southcentral Kentucky in the area, this he says saves three lives in your hometown every time you donate.

“If you ask me, this is the easiest way in the world to make a difference in somebody’s life and by giving and taking an hour out of your day, you are literally saving lives by rolling up that sleeve and donating this life-saving fluid.” Winitz said.

Keep an ear to the ground for any blood donation events taking place near you, some hospitals are almost always looking for blood donations as well.

Safely celebrating the holiday season https://www.wnky.com/safely-celebrating-the-holiday-season/ Sat, 30 Dec 2023 05:03:04 +0000 https://www.wnky.com/?p=1881364

BOWLING GREEN, KY.- As National Impaired Driving Prevention Month comes to a close we want to remind you to remain proactive.
If you’re celebrating or enjoying the new year, it’s important that you plan ahead. If you will be under the influence.

Experts expect a 117% increase in drunk driving related accidents that hurt people and cause fatal accidents. Sometimes, having too much fun can lead to these serious accidents.

We sat down with a partner at Hughes and Coleman, Lee Coleman who works with these cases. We learned the negative outcomes they face. Coleman says, “I just don’t know of anybody who wants to be responsible for ruining someone’s life just for the sake of having a good time. I think it’s more often than not paying attention to the details, getting into it, and people start having fun in the start. Have more fun, and then a little bit more fun, and all of a sudden you don’t know who’s able to drive.”

To make sure that your friends and family are safe, be intentional about having a designated driver or use a rideshare app to limit the amount of accidents caused by driving impaired. BOWLING GREEN, KY.- As we wrap up 2023, we must look at the major milestones accomplished by several tourism attractions here in Bowling Green.

The number of visitors who come to Bowling Green surpasses previous years. Thanks to the ARPA funds, tourism has impacted Bowling Green citizens and other cities like Atlanta, Cincinnati, and so much more.
According to Lauren Guess with the Bowling Green Convention and Visitors Bureau, the growth is beyond Bowling Green. Guess says, “While we do have a good presence from within the state coming to Bowling Green, we are seeing lots of different markets coming from outside the state as well. I mean, it’s exciting to hear Governor Beshear announce, you know, what the impact has been for the year.”
The economic increase wasn’t the only benefit of tourism in Bowling Green. It also helped the average Kentucky household save hundreds of dollars, and tourism will bring more in 2024.
