Serious gift card scam tips with the Warren County Sheriff’s Office

BOWLING GREEN, Ky.- Heads up if you are holiday shopping, right now there are millions of scams happening as we speak. Whether you are planning to give or get a gift card this season, the chances of you getting scammed are very high.

The Warren County Sheriff’s Office is urging buyers to beware. People are scratching the barcode off the back of gift cards and stealing the money off them.

We spoke to Warren County sheriff Brett Hightower and learned how serious gift card scams are.

He says, “Unfortunately, people have to be aware of so many different scams this time of year. People are trying to do the good thing. They’re trying to give to different entities and nonprofits, and unfortunately, these people are taking advantage of that in basically stealing money into people’s pockets.”

Scams are happening during the holiday season, so the WCSO is urging you to be as alert and cautious as possible. Hightower also encourages everyone, if you have been scammed in any way, file a complaint at ic3.gov/.
